What is the difference between a web designer and a web developer, a website and a web application?

Image
This morning, I found a telegram text from a friend of mine. What were the contents of the text? you ask? Well… nothing new. It was a familiar question he is used to asking: “You said you are a good web designer?”. This question has been asked me I don’t know how many times!! I always answer “yeah”. But back in my mind I know I am not!. Come on Simon… you mean you are lying to this guy that you are a web designer? NOT AT ALL! There is something more. This is not the first person to ask me that question. Many people have been asking me such questions. These people, however, confuse between a web designer and a web developer. If I was to ask that question for him, I would have asked: “ Simon, you said you are a good web developer” And I would have said yes! This brings me to today’s topic of discussion: What actually is web design? And is it different from web development? And what's the difference between a website and a web application? What is the difference between ...

The Ten Forms of Self Defeating Thoughts

Image
1. All or nothing - thinking You see things in black and white categories If a situation falls short of perfect, you see it as a total failure. When a young woman on a diet ate a spoonful of ice cream, she told herself, 'I've blown my diet completely.' This thought upset her so much that she gobbled down an entire quart of ice cream! 2. Overgeneralization You see a single negative event, such as a romantic rejection or a career reversal as a never-ending pattern of defeat by using words such as 'always' or "never" when you think about it. A depressed salesman became terribly upset when he noticed bird dung on the windshield of his car. He told himself, 'Just my luck! Birds are always crapping on my car!' 3. Mental filter You pick out a single negative detail and dwell on it exclusively, so that your vision of all of reality becomes darkened, like the drop of ink that discolors a beaker of water. Example: You ...

How to influence people Part 1

Image
The law of reciprocity I studied in a mixed day high school and there were many scandals of boy-girl relationships among the students. But of course, it was so difficult for teachers to figure out who was in a relationship with who and who not. Though, they were very determined to dig deeper and find out which students were in these scandals so that they can bring them to a stop by punishing the students involved. So, the teachers in my school were so wise, they used a method I never knew that has a very big impact in many areas of life. What did they do? They basically called the students they thought were more informed about other students in any class to the office. Then the teachers, before telling them the reason why they called them in the first place will buy them a full bread and a soda each and give them ample time to enjoy themselves. But it always didn’t end at that, they after doing that will take these students to a friendly questioning session. In this questioning...

Kenyan Telegram Channels and Groups to join in 2019

Image
Telegram is the King of messaging apps that has not been discovered by many people globally. Of recent, many people across the globe are moving in a hurry to install this application and perhaps uninstall WhatsApp and other messaging applications. The reason is that telegram has super important features that most messaging apps don't support yet. These features include: Telegram groups support up to 200,000 members. This is hundreds of times beyond WhatsApp which at the time of writing this article only supports 257 members per group. Telegram is a cloud-based application. This means that whether you uninstall it accidentally or lose your phone, you can still get back your messages when you install it back. Your messages won't be lost. Telegram has Channels, these basically allow people to subscribe to them and then the messages broadcasted by that specific channel will get to them. Let's say you have a brand that has followers, you can create a telegram channel an...

What happens when you 'signup with facebook'?

Image
On many websites nowadays you will find the buttons of signing up or logging in using FACEBOOK, or GOOGLE or TWITTER, etc displayed. But what really happens when you signup using tech giants like Google or twitter or facebook? Today I will explain to you in simple terms. If you are having an account with facebook or google or twitter, they have some basic information about you. This information is like your name, your profile picture, your email address and probably your phone number. Before I proceed, allow me to explain an important term here: API-Application Programming Interface. API in layman's language is a way of sharing information between applications. Facebook has the information I enumerated above about you stored in their database and this website/application you're trying to signup to needs that information about you. So, an API acts as a messenger. Facebook/Google/Twitter, etc have an API that shares information about you on your consent. When you click on si...

Should you go to school to study software development or not? and between IT, Computer Science, and Software Engineering, which one should you take? Software Engineers talk

Image
My friend has a degree in computer science but as we speak he forgot how to write a 'hello world' program. (the Simplest program you can write in any computer programming language). When I say I am a software developer yet I didn't take computer science he thinks I am FULL OF MYSELF...haha He may be right but where am I driving at? I have severally told any student I have had a chance to advise that compared to other courses, software development is quite a different thing! Universities and colleges will teach you computer science and IT and software engineering but NO University or college will teach you to become software developer! Hate me or love me...This does not mean I am against someone studying. Study and earn that degree or diploma or whatever it is. But take your time to learn how to write advanced programs. In school, you will be told to write programs that do simple things but remember this is not the case in the real world. In the real world, you write p...
